New Year / New posting schedule?

…No updates since October… not.. good… enough…

Well what can I say except I've been busy with a manic work schedule leading up to Christmas and I just haven't managed to find the time to post any updates :-/ as I like to use this blog as an online reminder/diary of all the stuff I buy I've promised myself I'm going to make an effort to post at least twice a month, ideally I would like to be posting once a week but realistically I don't buy that much stuff and my wife is expecting another baby so I think that it would be a stretch in between the dirty nappies and the lack of sleep :-)

To kick off the new year I'll be putting up a quick overview of my recently received PP03-L Lightning transformer from I-Gear toys, I spotted this was coming out a few months back and preordered it so its nice to finally have all three of the (original) seekers, unless I won the lottery I didn't think I would ever have managed to pick up an original Thundercracker.

Until next time.

R.I.P #58

This morning Marco Simoncelli sadly lost his life during the Malaysian MotoGP, Simoncelli lost control of his bike and was flung into the path of riders Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi leaving them nowhere to go. Simoncelli later succumbed to his injuries in the medical center.

Lots has already been written on the subject however from this MotoGP fan thanks for the memories Marco you were a riot on and off the track and will be sadly missed by all of us. R.I.P.

New Warcraft Expansion – Mists of Pandaria

Blizzcon 2011 opened today with the typical fanfare around Diablo III being 'almost ready' and the new Starscraft II expansion 'Heart of the Swarm' however the one I was interested in was the news about the the next WoW expansion and right on queue it was announced:

Mists of Pandaria

Level cap raised to 90

New Race – PANDA available to hunter, mage, monk, priest, rogue, shaman, warrior

New Class – Monk, Not a hero class – Starts at level 1, Monks can be any race except Goblin and Worgan

Class Racials – Lots of boring stuff but a 3 second stun queue totally OP rogues (World of Riftcraft?)

Class Specs - Brewmaster - Tank, Mistweaver Healer, Windwalker - Melee DPS

New Continent – Pandaria

News of this has been leaking for some time now specifically an Asian themed expansion however I was expecting more than one new race and I was definitely expecting it to be better than a bamboo munching kung foo panda :-/

I watched the WoW Panel to get a bit more info which I have summerised below.

More things being added to do in the end game (Not much more specific)
Need to get people back into the world, Sitting in Org and Stormwind is getting old.
Outdoor world raids are back. Griefing etc will be back with a vengeance.
Customisable 'daily' tasks, ie. if you like doing quests rather than run dailies you can earn valor for it.
Talent tree changed to avoid 'cookie cutter' builds leading to forced specs from raid leaders etc.

New Continent information

5 new zones in continent.
All zones make one unified continent.
Asian themed landscapes
AH,Bank, central quest hub in the continent < harks back to Burning Crusade
No flying until level 90

Starter Zone information

Zone name is the Jade Forrest

Horde wash up on the north side Alliance wash up on the south side

Temple of the Jade Serpent 85-86 dungeon in this zone.

The zone itself is on the back of a giant turtle (Pratchett isn't going to be happy!) with the entire zone being surrounded by a giant wall

Temple of the Jade Serpent 85-86 dungeon in this zone.

0-10 neutral faction then one time only selection of alliance or horde at that point.

Personally this isn't enough for me to head back to the game, its more of the same and the game as a whole is in real need of a graphics overhaul. Roll on project Titan.

Northern Virtual Machine User Group (VMUG)

On Tuesday myself and a colleague set out on the 40 mile journey from Manchester to Leeds for the Northern VMUG. 2 hours later (Thanks to crashing fools on the M60) we arrived at the mint hotel and sprinted into the Vnews session being hosted by @mike_laverick. 30 minutes later and after a good all round update and some debate with Mike it was time for Coffee and catching up with some of my colleagues including @marcdrinkwater and a few suppliers who I hadn't spoken to for a good while.

I decided to attend the PowerCLI session of @alanrenouf AKA @PowerCLIman as ever it was an interesting introduction of the scripting language and included really good overview of the new Vsphere 5 auto deploy options and how they are executed from PowerCLI. All very interesting stuff.

During Alan's presentation I asked a few questions as you do and was suprised to be rewarded with a prize for asking them! Alan kindly gave me a copy of the Trainsignal Vsphere training DVD's, these guides are presented by David Davis the oracle of all things VM (And lots of other things!)

For the last session of the day I attended @nigelpoulton's Vsphere 5 Storage Deepdive, this was a great session with lots of good speculation from Nigel around the future of VMware storage and the potential direction they are taking with VMFS as a file system. I took a few minutes after the session to introduce myself to Nigel as I'm a big fan of the work he has been doing on the #infosmack podcast (http://infosmackpodcasts.com/), he's a nice guy with a great attitude and I wish him every success with the podcast going forward.

After a quick Vbeer in the hotel bar we hit the road for the slow cruise back to Manchester. I sent a quick thank you tweet to Alan Renouf which he retweeted to the guys at @trainsignal, the next thing I know the hero that is @daviddavis dropped me a note to let me know he was going to send me a copy of the Vsphere 5 training DVD!

All in all an excellent day made even better by David Davis and the amazing people at Train Signal!

Battlefield 3 Open Beta

EA/Dice opened up the beta of Battlefield 3 to none pre order customers. It's available for PC,PS3 and Xbox 360, the beta is available until October 10th which is pretty reasonable given the release date of the final is currently scheduled for the 25th of October. Grab it now and get a feel for how it plays. I'm probably going to go with this rather than incoming BlackOps 2 but that is assuming it doesn't suck :-)

Amazon’s Kindle engineers are on fire!

Following up on my post a couple of days back Amazon announced not 1, not 2, not 3! but 4!! new devices today.

The expectation was they would release a 7' Android based tablet and maybe a touch screen upgrade to the aging Kindle 3, I have to say I didn't expect them to refresh the entire Kindle E-Ink line but as they seem to have adopted Apple's press conference style I guess it makes sense to cash in on the annual hardware release cycle as well.

Speaking of press conference style I think Amazon did a great job of using the 'Jobs' style of theatrical announcing. Having said that there was a major piece of the puzzle missing that being the charismatic animal that is Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos is without doubt a genius however his onstage charisma is none existent, at the point he announced the incredible $199 price point for the tablet I didn't hear one person in the audience cheer or clap… if that was an Apple announcement and Jobs had told everyone he was doubling the price of the IPhone people would be whooping and spraying champagne on him! 3 out of 10 for stage presence Jeff :-/

Device wise the old Kindle 3 has been replaced by a slightly smaller device (same 6 inch screen size) minus the keyboard, this isn't a bad move as I can't remember the last time I used the keyboard on my Kindle. The new Kindle Touch and Touch 3G now become the premium E-Ink devices sporting a funky infrared system to manage touch commands(presumably to avoid the secondary layer which can blur the E-ink display) and the same pared down style as the none touch Kindle. The Kindle Fire (I'm undecided on that name tbh) on the other hand is a completely new offering sporting a 7inch IPS full colour display and running on a highly customised version of Android, so customised that you would actually have no clue it was Android unless you were told. Amazon has done a great job with the UI bringing something a little different to the rest of the tablets on the market by displaying what you can only describe as a bookshelf of recent activities, these are categorised by music, movie, apps etc and can be customised to 'sticky' your favoite books and apps etc.

Other neat things Amazon has done is to put all your content in the cloud, this means unlimited storage for your device as they are now using the famous 'WhisperSync' to sync all of your content to the EC2 servers in the cloud, frankly I think it's days of whispering are over given the volume of data a tablet can consume so I'll be looking out for the rebranded 'ShoutingBloodlyLoudlySync' any time soon. Amazon also showed an interesting mechanism they have developed to speed up the web browsing experience, this works by the page being requested from EC2 which then makes the web call and constructs the page remotely, this is then sent back to the tablet in one data larger block rather than lots of smaller requests. It's a good idea (I believe opera mini uses a similar technique) however it remains to be seem what happens to Flash, AJAX etc.

All in all I think releasing the tablet at $199 will be game changing to the tablet market although I personally don't see this as an Ipad killer but maybe more of a 'my first tablet' device before you graduate to the elder statesman from cupertino, Apple might not be quaking in its boots just yet but I imagine the other tablet vendors are feeling pretty sorry for themselves tonight.

Kindle Fire

Kindle Touch

Kindle

Currently only the low end replacement E-Ink tablet is available for pre order in the UK, the ship date for the Fire in the US currently stands at Nov 15th. If this launch is anything like the Kindle 3 release people will be waiting for weeks to get their hands on one.

Google+ god damn!

Since Google+ went free for all last week it's reporting that traffic has ramped up 1,269% and they are now receiving 15 million visits per week, great numbers but some way below the 1.7 billion weekly visits being touted by Facebook.

Now I like Google+ it's clean and has some great features embedded (Hangouts etc) but the one thing that drives me crazy is the lack of Google Apps support!

I mean seriously if I'm using Google Apps it means I've made a decision to centralise on Google services and in a lot of cases pay for them be they Apps pro, Storage etc. If anything we should get it first for showing additional commitment! it was the same deal with Reader and YouTube and now they are shafting us again with Plus. Until this is fixed I can't afford to get 'engaged' with plus as if they don't allow me to merge my 'stand alone' account with my apps service I could lose all the effort I've put into setting up circles etc.

Get it sorted please Google and for gods sake don't make the integration a complete pain in the rear like you did for the other services.

Amazon press conference 28th Sept

As a long time fan of both the Kindle application and the physical E-Ink reader I had been anticipating Amazon calling a press conference as get closer to the Christmas shopping season. For months now speculation has been rife that Amazon will be releasing an IPad competitor toward the end of 2011 so the 28th must be the announcement… right?

Well possibly however there do seem to be some other opinions to what may be announced.

  • Announce they have purchased Netflix

Earlier this month Netflix announced to the world that they were splitting in two companies one for streaming media (Netflix) and one for posted media (Qwikster???) given that Amazon recently acquired LoveFilm here in the UK Netflix would be a welcome addition to the brand delivering an instant boost to the library of movies at their disposal.

  • Announce a new E-Ink touch screen reader

Following the release of the Nook 'Simple Touch Reader' Amazon's best selling Kindle 3 tablet has been left looking a little dated (Not that it has affected the sales) due to its lack of a touch screen and slightly 'dated' looking full keyboard. This has potential for announcement as Amazon has history in providing E-Ink devices with a combination of the best screen and the lightest form factor, not having a touch screen is decidedly 2010 so I'm sure they will want to keep ahead of the curve in a sector they already dominate.

Decisions Decisions……

Regardless of the options I can't see how Amazon will not announce a tablet on Wednesday, it's the right time of year to set the expectation something big is coming and frankly they are the only other player in the market that has the ecosystem to make any kind of challenge to the dominance of Apple's well stocked (but bloated) ITunes library. In case you have been living under a rock for the last 12 months these are the rumored specs:

  • 7 Inch form factor (Launch device, supposed to be followed up my 10')
  • Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core cpu
  • Up to 12 hours battery life
  • Modified Android Honeycomb OS
  • Integrated with Amazons App Store

So basically imagine a Blackberry playbook skinned up in Amazon's colour scheme and with more than 3 apps to download and you could have the Amazon tablet, if they do well with Cloud player, Cloud drive, Netflix/Lovefilm and Kindle bookstore integration this could be the best Ipad challenger we have seen.

Roll on Wednesday.

Forza 4 preview

Being a Forza 3 fan and a long term fan of the racing game genre (you all have GT Legends right?)

I was delighted to read on Gamespot that Forza 4 is almost ready for release (Oct 11) and is looking totally mint. This is a must have purchase for me so I can see an expensive couple of months ahead as we roll into prime time game release season. Credit card at the ready baby! and don't tell the wife!

I’ve never seen anything this beautiful in the entire galaxy – alright, give me the bomb

TFW2005 are reporting a sighting of a potential MP UltraMagnus. From the picture it looks like too much of a hash job to confirm it as a definate follow up to the impending MP10 but if it turns out to be true it will make a lot of TF fans very happy, this figure has been requested for a long long time. One to watch!
